Why Zumba Students Need Chiropractors

Why Zumba Students Need Chiropractors

Zumba is the name of a dance fitness program, created by dancer and choreographer Alberto ("Beto") Perez in Columbia during the 1990s. The idea behind his class, was to make excerising fun. Zumba classes are now offered through licensed instructors in more than 100,000 fitness center locations in 110 countries with ten million participants.

Music is the key ingredient to Zumba classes. The music created to specifically help you transition from one work out to another, from toning to strengthening then to cardio and then moving to another. You will work out every muscle group in the body. Though, most designed exercise programs will accomplish this feat as well. The Zumba program borrows from many dance styles including salsa and hip hop.

Zumba, though fun and exciting, if not practiced correctly, can knock your body directly out of alignment. Twisting and turning and dancing around will cause you to lose weight and rejuvenate, yes. But, have you considered the impact it is making on your skeletal structure?

We recommend working out! It is good for you. Though, at Better Health, we prefer practices that are going to focus on low impact, and specific body alignment. We want you to have a trained instructor who is going to adjust you, and teach you while you are practicing and training. The idea is to keep your alignment throughout the day, and your life. Practicing activities such as Yoga, Pilates and Tai Chi are great outlets for this type of body awareness. Though, we have to admit, not as high energy as Zumba, though you might not find yourself limping to the chiropractor the next day!

Sport Yoga vs. Yin Yoga

Hey folks!

We had a really great, really challenging Sport yoga class Monday night. So what is sport yoga? Well, you could classify sport yoga as one in which you sweat, your heart rate goes up, your endurance is enhanced, and you can really really feel the burn.

So tonight (at 6 pm at Better Health Chiropractic in Fort Mitchell Ky) we will be trying something new. I will be introducing YIN yoga. This is the Yin to the Yang. Yang- could be the sport, and Yin could be the relaxation yoga. So, in essence, we will still be getting the same deep muscle stretch, the same stamina and benefits from sport yoga, without the need to be physically fit first.

I would recommend this as a "gentle yoga", or a "yoga for beginners". A great way to get started doing yoga!

See you tonight!

The Great Benefits of Yoga

Some of the Benefits of Yoga....

Increasing Flexibility – yoga has positions that act upon the various joints of the body including those joints that are never really on the ‘radar screen’ let alone exercised.

Increasing lubrication of the joints, ligaments and tendons – likewise, the well-researched yoga positions exercise the different tendons and ligaments of the body.

Surprisingly it has been found that the body which may have been quite rigid starts experiencing a remarkable flexibility in even those parts which have not been consciously work upon. Why? It is here that the remarkable research behind yoga positions proves its mettle. Seemingly unrelated “non strenuous” yoga positions act upon certain parts of the body in an interrelated manner. When done together, they work in harmony to create a situation where flexibility is attained relatively easily.

Massaging of ALL Organs of the Body – Yoga is perhaps the only form of activity which massages all the internal glands and organs of the body in a thorough manner, including those – such as the prostate - that hardly get externally stimulated during our entire lifetime. Yoga acts in a wholesome manner on the various body parts. This stimulation and massage of the organs in turn benefits us by keeping away disease and providing a forewarning at the first possible instance of a likely onset of disease or disorder.

Complete Detoxification – By gently stretching muscles and joints as well as massaging the various organs, yoga ensures the optimum blood supply to various parts of the body. This helps in the flushing out of toxins from every nook and cranny as well as providing nourishment up to the last point. This leads to benefits such as delayed ageing, energy and a remarkable zest for life.

Excellent toning of the muscles – Muscles that have become flaccid, weak or slothy are stimulated repeatedly to shed excess flab and flaccidity.

Chiropractic...What is it, anyway?

Chiropractic is a health care profession that focuses on the relationship between the body's structure—mainly the spine—and its functioning. Although practitioners may use a variety of treatment approaches, they primarily perform adjustments (manipulations) to the spine or other parts of the body with the goal of correcting alignment problems, alleviating pain, improving function, and supporting the body's natural ability to heal itself.

The chiropractic perspective on health and disease emphasizes two fundamental concepts:

  1. the structure and condition of the body influences how the body functions and its ability to heal itself; and

  2. the mind-body relationship is instrumental in maintaining health and in the healing processes.

Although chiropractic shares much with other health professions, its emphasis and application of philosophy distinguishes it from modern medicine. Chiropractic philosophy gravitates toward a holistic ("total person") approach to healing which combines elements of the mind, body and spirit and maintains that health depends on obedience to natural laws, and that deviation from such laws can result in illness.

Chiropractic Philosophy includes:

  • emphasis on patient recuperative abilities rather than surgery

  • recognition that dynamics exist between lifestyle, environment and health

  • understanding the cause of illness in order to eliminate it, rather than simply treat symptoms

  • recognition of the centrality of the nervous system and its intimate relationship with the capacities of the human body

  • balancing benefits versus risks of clinical interventions

  • recognition of the primary importance of monitoring progress closely through appropriate diagnostic procedures

  • a patient-centered, hands-on approach focused on influencing function through structure

  • focus on early intervention emphasizing timely diagnosis and treatment of conditions that are wholly functional and reversible
Chiropractic philosophy blends an effective combination of conviction, critical thinking, open-mindedness, and appreciation of the natural order of things. Chiropractic focuses on the establishment and maintenance of a relationship between patients and their environment which is most conducive to functional well-being.
